Orthodontic treatment has helped millions of people achieve healthier and more confident smiles. However, many patients still have questions before starting treatment. If you are considering braces, understanding how the process works, what to expect, and how braces benefit your oral health can help you feel more prepared and comfortable with your decision.
In our previous blog, we discussed important aftercare tips and habits to follow while wearing braces. In this article, we answer some of the most common questions patients have about braces and what to expect.
Many individuals exploring orthodontic treatment want to know how braces work, how long the process takes, and what changes they can expect during treatment. Questions about comfort, daily care, and treatment results are also common. Patients often ask whether braces are only for teenagers, how visible they will be, and how they may affect eating or speaking. Learning the answers to these common concerns helps people feel more confident about starting treatment and understanding how braces in Sacramento can improve both their smile and overall oral health.
Braces are widely used to treat teeth that are not properly aligned and to correct bite problems. When teeth are crowded, spaced unevenly, or positioned incorrectly, they can affect both appearance and oral health. Orthodontic treatment gradually moves teeth into better alignment, improving the way your teeth fit together when you bite and chew. Patients often seek braces to address problems such as crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, or gaps between teeth. Straightening teeth also makes daily oral hygiene easier, reducing the risk of plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay over time.
Modern orthodontics offers several types of braces designed to meet different patient needs and preferences. Traditional metal braces remain a reliable option and are widely used because of their durability and effectiveness. Ceramic braces are another option that uses tooth-colored brackets, making them less noticeable. Some patients may also qualify for clear aligner systems, which are removable trays designed to gradually shift teeth. An orthodontic evaluation helps determine which treatment option is best based on your dental condition and treatment goals.
The length of orthodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the alignment issue. In many cases, braces are worn for approximately 18 to 24 months. Minor corrections may take less time, while more complex bite problems may require longer treatment. Regular visits to the dental office are necessary so adjustments can be made to the braces. These adjustments help guide the teeth into their proper positions over time.
Although braces are often associated with teenagers, orthodontic treatment is increasingly common among adults. Many adults choose braces to improve the appearance of their smile and address long-standing alignment concerns. An experienced cosmetic dentist in Sacramento may recommend orthodontic treatment as part of a comprehensive smile improvement plan, especially when correcting tooth alignment can enhance both aesthetics and long-term oral function.
It is normal to experience mild discomfort after braces are first placed or after adjustments are made. This sensation usually lasts only a few days and gradually fades as your mouth adapts to the braces. Orthodontists may recommend soft foods, proper oral hygiene, and orthodontic wax to help minimize irritation. Most patients find that any discomfort becomes manageable once they become accustomed to wearing braces.
Occasionally, minor orthodontic issues may occur, such as a loose bracket or a wire that feels uncomfortable. While many situations can be managed temporarily at home, it is important to contact your dental provider if discomfort persists. In urgent situations involving dental pain or injury, visiting an emergency dentist in Sacramento can help ensure the problem is addressed promptly while protecting your overall oral health.
Orthodontic treatment offers long-term benefits for both dental health and confidence. Understanding the process, treatment options, and care involved can help patients make informed decisions about improving their smiles. If you are considering braces or have questions about orthodontic care, professional guidance can help you explore the best options for your needs.

I am so impressed with the entire experience. From the friendly reminders, to entering the office, and especially the dentist! My previous dentist Stephen C Ott, DDS, was incredible. I had the benefits of his gift since 1971. I was worried about finding a new dentist. However, I was blessed to have Dr. Ott recommend his dentist: Dr. Lillian Stojic. I recommend her to all!!!

Dr. Lilliana and her staff make getting teeth cleaned and a cavity filled as good an experience as possible. They get the job done with minimal pain and discomfort.

I just had a visit to Dr. Stojic's office. My ten year old daughter had an infected tooth that had to be extracted. She was so nervous and scared at the possibility of an extraction. When we arrived we were greeted warmly by her office manager and then by her equally kind assistant who brought us back to her room...

Dr. Lilliana and her staff are not only effective and efficient, but they also remove my anxiety. When I had to have a root canal, I was nervous about the pain. I was given the choice of Nitrous oxide gas and that calmed me.

Dr. Stojic saw two of my children. The youngest was so comforted by her easygoing and confident demeanor that he was the quietest and most still 4 year old I've seen in a dentist chair! Our older son was very afraid of the dentist and has been to a couple other dentists who were unable to treat him because of his scared behavior. Dr. Stojic was very patient and helped him understand what she was doing at every step, which calmed him down so she was able to fill his cavities and even extract a tooth. We were thoroughly impressed with Dr. Stojic and her office and staff.
